So far, the book has introduced a few new characters and how they aren't as rich as the Logans. These characters are the Ellises and their aunt, Mrs. Lee Annie Lees. The Ellises live in a shack and there is another shack right next to their's in which their aunt, Mrs. Lee Annie Lees, lives in along with her grandson.
All the adults, including Mrs. Lee Annie Lees grandson, Russell, start talking about what happened the previous summer in the book ,Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, because Russell had joined the army so he wouldn't go hungry.
While the adults are talking, Cassie (the narrator), Little Man (the youngest of the Logans), Christoper-John(the quiet one who is older than Little Man), Don Lee (a new character), and Don Lee's brother, Son-Boy (a new character) play marbles and whoever knocks out the other person's marbles with their marble gets to the keep the knocked out marble. Cassie's papa comes out and says that the Logan children should return the marbles to Don Lee and Son-Boy because gambling of marbles can lead to gambling of money, and that wasn't right.
